Scientific publication by Dr. V. Izerskyy and Dr. Y. Bezverkhov on the Saturniid moth fauna of Peru.

A Fundamental Work on Peru’s Saturniidae: Results of 30 Years of Research by Dr. V. Izerskyy and Dr. Y. Bezverkhov

The 28th issue of the Altai Zoological Journal (2026) features a monumental scientific work that marks a major milestone in the study of South American entomofauna. The authors of the publication are Dr. V. Izerskyy (head of ONG ACRENAP) and Dr. Y. Bezverkhov.

The article presents an annotated checklist of the wild silkmoth family (Saturniidae) and is the culmination of more than 50 expeditions conducted by the authors between 1997 and 2026.

Key Highlights of the Study:

  • Record Diversity. A total of 491 Saturniidae species have been identified. This is one of the most comprehensive lists for the region, covering five subfamilies.

  • Extensive Analysis. The work spans 13 departments of Peru and 12 different ecosystems, ranging from coastal areas to high-altitude forests (up to 3,300 m above sea level) and the humid Amazon rainforest.

  • Ecological Value. For the first time, data on larval host plants and geographic distribution have been systematized for such a vast number of species.

  • Scientific Foundation. This publication confirms the status of ONG ACRENAP as a leading center for biodiversity research in the Selva Central region.

This comprehensive work by Dr. Izerskyy and Dr. Bezverkhov will serve as the primary reference material for entomologists and ecologists studying the natural heritage of Peru.
