New Contribution to the Systematics of American Katydids: Subtribes Microcentrina and Stilpnochlorina

An international group of entomologists presented a large-scale study of American katydids (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae). The work describes 39 new taxa. These include new genera, subgenera, and species from the Amazon basin.

The latest issue of the Russian Entomological Journal (2026) features an article by Dr. Andrey Gorochov. This work focuses on the systematics of true katydids. This publication is the 13th report in the author’s long-term series. It expands our knowledge of the tribe Steirodontini. This group of katydids is known for masterfully mimicking tree foliage.

Key Discoveries of the Study:

  • New Taxa. 39 new taxa have been described. These include the new genus Problemovapex from Nicaragua and many new species.

  • New Subtribe. Scientists established the new subtribe Stilpnochlorina. It complements existing groups within the Steirodontini tribe.

  • Genus Revision. The author analyzed the genera Ischyra, Microcentrum, and Tropicophyllum. Several names were restored from synonymy.

  • Morphology. The article proposes a refined wing venation scheme. This is critically important for accurate species diagnosis.

Research in Peru

A significant part of the material was collected during expeditions in Peru (Junín, Ucayali, Cusco, and Loreto). The work was part of the NGO ACRENAP project led by Dr. V.V. Izerskyy. Among the findings are species named after the country, such as Ischyra peruensis. Species from the vicinity of Satipo and the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve are also described.
